Here at the Anti-Anti we like our designs (mostly)hand-drawn. My latest project involves a monster, but not any monster.  A Surf Rock monster! What exactly IS a surf rock monster? I’m sorry you don’t already know. A Surf Rock monster is pure rock n’ roll in the chillest sense. They are (generally) good guys, they are solar powered and love mango smoothies infused with rum. They are highly misunderstood, however this doesn’t get this Monster down, they have the ocean and the ocean has them. It is mysteriously symbiotic. these monsters love to play music, and you will specifically find them playing in a band or… three simultaneously-in Venice Beach, every Sunday before dusk.

To create this guy, I used my imagirnations, some surf rock music, a pencil and a couple of Acurit and Micron pens. In this video I wanted to show a little snippet of the magic in the making.  I wanted to create a silly, happy, design that makes people smile.

“I don’t hate people, I just feel better when they aren’t around.”

-Charles Bukowski

Before everyone and their mothers labeled themselves cynical “introverts”, there was Bukowski. The OG introvert. His quotes are continually reblogged by angsty teenagers on Tumblr. Yet, Bukowski died in 1994, before most of those kids were even conceived, Listen…this is not a bad thing. Not bad at all. Although there is no shortage of relevant authors, Bukowski’s words resonate strongly with today’s generation.

Some of Bukowski’s works were published in the midst of the “Leave it to beaver era”. But, he mostly remained an outcast in the literary world. It was a time when the only correct way to be American was to secure a good office job, buy a manicured suburban home and put a ring on a demure dame and pop out two kids-to all this Bukowski said, fuck that! (or something similar.) Oh, wait…this is what he said:

“You lose what individualism you have, if you have enough of course, you retain some of it, but most don’t have enough, so they become watchers of game shows, y’know, things like that. Then you work the 8 hour job with almost a feeling of goodness, like you’re doing something, and you get married, like marriage is a victory and you have children like having children is a victory, but most things people do are a total grind, marriage, birth, children, it’s something they HAVE to do because they have nothing else to do. There is no glory in it, no esteem, no fire, their lives are flat and the earth is full of them. Sorry, but thats the way I see it. I could not accept the snail’s pace 8-5, Johnnie Carson, merry christmas, happy new year, to me it’s the sickest of all sick things.”

His ability to be an authentic introvert enabled him to observe society as a whole, and unmask the facade. Bukowski’s perspective was not welcome in the mainstream arena. The youth of today (Millenials as they/we are called) have seen a system failure, not one promised to them, but to their parents and grandparents.  One can’t help but find solace in Bukowski’s liquor-laden-word-smithery.  Modernity can’t help but relate to him.

What if Bukowski had the internet during his youth? Would he even bothered with social media? If so, would he have been a Facebook guy? maybe a regular on Reddit? Who knows…There are enough Bukowski memes on the internet to compensate for it.

Here are some of my favorites:

(some of these quotes may be…a little…loose)

If you are ever having a bad day, Mr. Bukowski has advice, “Something else is hurting you-that’s why you need pot, or whiskey or screaming music turned so fucking loud you can’t think.”

If you love him. Wear him. Let him scream at the world for you, through you. Offend the masses by wearing this gem. The Meowkowski shirt. .

Brian Eno was first introduced to me as “The Godfather of Ambient.” It is a brilliant description, but what does that even mean?

The Ambient genre was not only coined by Brian Eno, but was brought to you by him. How exactly does one describe ambient? Essentially-it is low key music made to modify one’s perception of a surrounding environment. Landscape music, if you will.

We are familiar with the feelings that can overcome us when we listen to the tremor of a strong voice, an intense drum beat, a sad bass or a fuzzy guitar.  Those sounds are conspicuously influential, because they are bold and in your face. Knowing this, one must admit then-there is genius in subtle manipulation. This is where Eno entered the picture.

Brian-Eno-1

His discography boasts names such as Talking Heads (David Byrne), David Bowie, DEVO, U2. Even Bauhaus covered Eno. His production style and techniques  a huge part in the way our music sounds. From Punk, Electronic and hip-hop (You know all that seamless sampling, guys).

Oh, and you know that… six-second start up music-sound of the Windows 95 OS, AKA “The Microsoft Sound”? Not impressed! What? You weren’t even born before 1995? Check this out:  that “Windows sound” is approximately 3 1/4 seconds long. This is what Eno said about it “I made eighty-four pieces. I got completely into this world of tiny, tiny little pieces of music. I was so sensitive to microseconds at the end of this that it really broke a logjam in my own work. Then when I’d finished that and I went back to working with pieces that were like three minutes long, it seemed like oceans of time.”

Brian-Eno-eno

That is Eno. He IS binary code. He paints music. His medium is sound. Sure-he is an odd cat and his nuanced ways about production may be incomprehensible to many. However, those ways changed the form in which music is approached, composed, performed, and perceived. But he is neither arrogant, nor a mystic. He is a community man, he believes that collectively through people and sound, great things will be achieved.

If you are ever feeling lost about your life calling. Take heart: “As a result of going into a subway station and meeting [saxophonist Andy], I joined Roxy Music, and, as a result of that, I have a career in music. If I’d walked ten yards further on the platform, or missed that train, or been in the next carriage, I probably would have been an art teacher now”.

It is 2016 and “Do you want me to play that song on vinyl? Tape? CD? or iTunes?” Holy shit! You can actually do that. That’s roughly 70 years of music history and technology and we can easily access anytime. Wow.

Recording music isn’t anything new, but the way it’s done has drastically changed, it seems that ever since the mid 1800’s we’ve been dolling out new technology quite rapidly.  We are in a place and time where we can  liberally choose our medium. So, how do you listen to your music?

In the last decade we have seen an obvious resurgence of the Vinyl format.    We can thank the eager interest from millennials in the 2000’s!             You shouldn’t scoff if you’re a production snob (Audiophile). It is great news. More demand means, more albums will likely get re-issued and perhaps get a recording treatment. (Mobile Sound Fidelity, yeah?)

Exhibit A: The Vinyl Record

A combination of novelty, nostalgia and trend has instigated a sales spike in cassette tapes recently. Some benefits of cassettes: they are smaller and a more inexpensive analog format to own. Even though the audio quality of a cassette can’t compare to the lossless format of vinyl, it still provides a beautiful and tangible audio experience.

Exhibit B: ye 'ol Tape.
Exhibit B: ye ‘ol Tape.

The future of digitalizing the digital, is currently in the works. Technology addicts, Audiophiles and commoners will debate whether one format is superior to another…or if it even matters at all. While there are pro’s and con’s to everything. We clearly see how particular formats(cough-vinyl-cough) Produce a tactile, visual and audio experience. Some express concerns about the environmental effect–some debate that the production of said media is insignificant.

Amoeba Records, Hollywood. AKA Music Heaven!

While the digital era has done wonders by allowing new artists to emerge and connect to other people. It has also downplayed the music experience all together. While there are so many options, most people have restricted their ears even more.  They are no longer forced to listen to an entire album, they can no longer spend hours studying the album art and lyrics…they can’t even SMELL the music for goddsakes!

Exhibit C: The digital Playing Device Apparatus.

I don’t intend on pretending that I know what the future holds, but right now we have choices. We have come far enough in history, we just might indefinitely have choices. I don’t know. It will also take a few years into the future to see how this era of choice but compressed, impatient ears affected our culture.

Thomas Alan Waits is our favorite devil indeed! Is he a super hero or villain? Is his voice really THAT fucked up sounding? Does he really drink THAT much? Yes and no. The truth about Tom Waits is that we will never actually how much of it is an act, and how much of it is real. This blurred line of theatrics and reality makes him a fascinating cat. This is why we love him.

The funny thing is that even though Tom Waits is a legend to some. He is described as “The last beatnik of contemporary music.” Yet he isn’t very famous, people either know him, or they don’t. Which is odd, if you check out his resume, it might just take you an entire day to get through those credits.  Funny enough, his most well-known songs are songs covered by already famous artists! (“Downtown Train” by Rod Stewart, anyone?)

When you listen to/watch Tom Waits stories, you get sucked into the seediness and come out feeling a little grittier, drunker and badass. Is there anything this man CAN’T do?

Do you dig Tom Waits? if so spread the good word, spread that good Tom Waits gospel. If someone tells you they have never heard of him discard them, or better yet make them familiar with him. Show them the movies and play them the songs/stories. Why? because he is a timeless part of our creative human history, he moves and shakes with his words. That, right there, is pure magic.

Already a fan? Check our Tom Waits inspired t-shirt below.

Also, if you love that voice Tom Waits described like “it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car.”  I will leave you with this cheeky little video.  Enjoy 🙂

Do you remember when you first fell in love with one of your favorite bands? I bet you can. You can conjure up the very room you were in, the lighting, the weather.

When you hear a music lover speak about one of their favorite bands, you can see it in their eyes and you hear it in their voice. They light up, they become more alive and animated.  They might as well be telling you a story about how they met their first love, or significant other.

One of my favorite bands ever (if you couldn’t tell) is Modest Mouse.  I discovered them way too late. So late it is embarrassing. It was one of those bands I had always heard about, the ones my friends always told me I HAD to listen to.  Years went by, so many years…before I got to that part of ‘music to listen to’ list.

I was having a rough night, the ones filled that aimless angst, the nervous energy of existence and uncertainty. You know the ones I am talking about. One of the best remedies to appease said feelings was to delve into some new music. Off I went to Fred Meyer’s (the only store open after 10 p.m) music section and browsed around. Sifting through the cd’s in alphabetical order I arrived at the M’s, immediately that blue cover of ‘The Moon and Antartica’ popped up from the bunch. The voices of my friends hauntingly said  “listen to Modest Mouse!” they persuaded me to pick it up and purchase it.  I had made a promise to myself, that even if I didn’t take to the first song I had to listen to the entire album whilst reading the lyrics.

It seemed to be the perfect night, It was December in Alaska. The ice and snow had engulfed the city, the full moon gave it all a blue glow.   I drove far enough away from the city lights and parked amid some trees. There I took the small booklet and opened it, I inserted the CD. Track one began playing. The rest is history…

You know, some things are just meant for you. The perfect time, place and soundtrack is a magical combination.

My relationship with Modest Mouse has been many things, even rocky and uncertain at times. However, they will remain as one of my favorites. My love for their music has been a definitive factor in the Anti Anti Shop’s design.  Designs where true, fellow fans can find subtle fan shirts.

I decided to make this design look like a kitschy souvenir shirt, that one would buy in rural Ohio.

So how did I get into the “screen printing business”? Well, ever since I was five years old I dreamt designing and printing t-shirts! No. That is completely false. I don’t honestly believe anyone ever plans, or dreams of becoming a screen printer, per se.  However, circumstances change and things happen leading you to unknown hidden paths in your life, and sometimes the path leads to t-shirts.

Back when I worked a regular corporate job I would spend my days pining over all my lost creative potential. Doodles, collages, paintings and projects were all displayed in a corner of my home-office like an altar to my potential life. Enough was enough, though. I decided to quit my “regular” job for a, um, somewhat, scribbly…foggy…plan of sorts.  I joined forces with my other half and merged our goals and talents to make it happen.

…and so The Anti Anti was birthed into the cosmos.

Wearing one of our creations: The Meowkowski Shirt.
Wearing one of our creation: The Meowkowski Shirt.

We are still a work in process. Much like any large, independent endeavor, there have been hurdles and kinks.  You realize there is a lot more creativity needed than you thought. 🙂
